Wehling wins humanities award

“She’s the embodiment of ideals for social justice and activist in this community are very pleased to see her win this award,” said Dr. Matthew Richard, associate professor of anthropology, sociology and criminal justice.

Dr. Richard nominated Dr. Susan Wehling, associate professor of modern and classical languages, for the Georgia Humanities Council’s “Humanities Heroes” of Georgia award.

The Georgia Humanities Council honors “humanities heroes” of Georgia each spring through the presentation of the Governor’s Awards in the Humanities. The Web site, http://www.georgiahumanities.org, states the awards are presented to individuals and organizations who build community, character and citizenship in Georgia through their efforts in humanities education. This year, Dr. Wehling is one of 13 people to win the award.

“I wouldn’t just nominate anyone average?this woman is extraordinary,” Dr. Richard said. “We in this professor community hold Susan in high esteem. We speak about high ideals, but Susan is committed to them and she achieves her idealism. She undertakes lots of projects, no matter how difficult.”

The Georgia Humanities Council serves Georgia through its projects and grant program. It is an independent nonprofit organization that receives funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the State of Georgia, foundations, corporations and individuals. The Council supports educational activities that help Georgia residents learn about their heritage and stories, which prepare them to make decisions for the future.

Recipients of the Governor’s Humanities Medals are nominated by the public, reviewed by a committee of the Georgia Humanities Council Board and selected ultimately by the governor.
