David Dean took over the head coaching job at VSU last spring after spending seven years as VSU’s Offensive coordinator.
Coaching football runs in the Dean family, as Dean’s father and older brother also coached football. Dean credits his father as his inspiration for becoming a coach. The two have kept him around football his entire life.
His wife Stacie and daughters Caroline, Allison and Natalie are very supportive of the game and his new position. Dean also said that his mom and sisters come out for support.
Dean’s most memorable college football moment was playing for Georgia Tech against UGA in 1984. With a score of 35-6, he can still remember UGA fans leaving the stands. Dean stated that while playing at Georgia Tech, he felt as though he was apart of a strong family and he had a lot of fun and built long-lasting relationships with his teammates. He would like to see the same for his team here.
When it comes to taking over the job from legend Chris Hatcher, Dean says that the job is fun and not much different from serving as Valdosta State’s offensive coordinator. Dean was a part of the team that won the 2004 National Championship. Dean enjoyed seeing his guys rewarded for their accomplishment and took pleasure in knowing that they were the best in the country.
“It was a thrill of a lifetime,” Dean said.
For the 2007-2008 football season Dean wants to keep his team focused one game at a time. He wants to win the State Championship, Gulf South conference and take the team to the playoffs.
“VSU has a healthy and talented team, and if our players stay focused, I can see them winning another National Championship,” Dean said.
