Blazers Travel to UWG

The Whole Story

Baseball

Who I am and what I do: My name is Lee Johnson and I am the Sports Editor for The Spectator . I am an English major and have been working with The Spectator for almost two years. I started as the Sports Editor in January 2008.

Why this story is important:
The VSU baseball team is traveling to West Georgia this weekend to take part in a three game series. Not only is this series important to the baseball team in terms of the season, but also important to the team in terms of pride. West Georgia is our in-state rival and beating the Wolves in any sport gives VSU bragging rights until the next meeting.

What I did to get this story: I had to pull this story together at the last minute, so I didn’t have time for interviews, but I got all of my information from VSU’s athletic website and also UWG’s athletic website.

The Blazers do not get the weekend off this week. Instead they travel to Carrollton, Ga. to protect their perfect GSC record against in-state rival, West Georgia, in a three game series. The Wolves (26-9, 3-3) pose no easy task for the Blazers (23-10-1, 6-0).

UWG is statistically better on offense than VSU, boasting a .344 team batting average with 272 runs on 370 hits. Senior outfielder, Nolan Childers, leads the Wolves with a batting average of .405 and 26 RBIs on 47 hits. UWG’s potent offense will be tested this weekend as VSU’s pitching staff is among the best in the GSC. As a team, the Blazers have a 3.77 ERA with 229 strike outs this season. Senior right-hander and GSC Pitcher-of-the-Week, Will Thompson, leads the Blazers’ pitching staff with a 5-1 record and a 1.88 ERA. Thompson has allowed only 11 runs on 35 hits, striking out 47 in his six games as a starter.

If UWG has a weakness, it is found in their pitching staff. The lowest ERA out of any starter is 3.15 and the highest is 8.59. The Wolves’ pitching staff has given up 198 runs on 310 hits, 161 of those runs are earned. Compare that to VSU’s staff, who has given up 118 runs on 292 hits. Junior shortstop, Jon Koenigsfled, and the Blazers will look to gain full benefit from this obvious advantage. Koenigsfled leads the Blazers offensively with a .427 batting average and 22 RIBS on 53 hits.

With a good showing this weekend in Carrollton, VSU will have the momentum going into the last month of regular season play. After the three game series with UWG, the Blazers will travel to Florida to take on St. Leo on April 8. The next GSC match will be a three game series against North Alabama on April 12-13 in Florence, Ala.
