With football season well under way, many traditions are formed and continued from year to year. One well known tradition is the tradition of tailgating.
Tailgating is an event that many people participate in each year. Some people have simple set ups and enjoy games and socializing. Others have more complex set ups, some even having televisions blaring ESPN to surrounding people for constant updates. But no matter now simple or complex your prospective on tailgating is, there are some things everyone should remember.
Arriving early is essential to  setting up tents, grills, or any other equipment that is used throughout the day, especially for food preparation. Arriving early also allows you to set up your area in the cooler air of the early morning instead of afternoon heat.
Two things never to forget are coolers and lots of ice. Ice helps keep drinks chilled, food cold and can also provide a way to cool off on hot Saturday afternoons. If you are going to be grilling out, raw meats need to stay out of the heat in order to prevent food poisoning.
It is always important to stay hydrated during hot temperatures. Make sure you have plenty of water and other sources of good hydration. As for other beverages, it is best to drink out of aluminum cans or plastic bottles. Glass is obviously easily broken and can cause harm very easily. Don’t forget your koozie!         Not only can you show support of your favorite team, you can also keep your beverage cold while doing so.
Injuries are possible during such events, so remember to bring a first aid kit to help clean up any accidents that may occur. No one likes raccoon eyes and farmer tans, so remember sunscreen to prevent sunburn and any unwanted tan lines that can pop up from prolonged sun exposure.
Always be aware of your surroundings during this pre-game tradition.
“There are lots of families, so be aware of what you say and how you act, you never know who is watching,” said Courtney Walker, veteran tailgater.
Mother Nature is very unpredictable, so always be prepared for any kind of weather.
“Ponchos, umbrellas, jackets, and comfortable clothing are good things to have just in case the weather gets crazy,” Walker said.
Be considerate of the environment. It is very important to clean your mess and keep your area tidy.
