The Story

Who I am and what I do: My name isĀ  Danielle Everson, a Senior with a major in Journalism and Broadcast. Currently I am a reporter and Copy-editor for the Spectator and I inform students of news that that happens on the VSU campus.

Why this story is important: Staying connected is always important. Therefore, this new client Jive allows students and faculty another way of keeping in contact with their peers and co-workers. This is significant because it builds stronger relationships with the fellow VSU community given students and staff another way to relate and talk to each other .

What I did to get this story: The interview was set-up with Information Technology through Kathy Sundkin. I asked the group a set of questions and brought up concerns that students might have about the new system.

The Division of Information Technology brings forth a new way for VSU to keep in touch with the new Jive instant messaging system.

“It gives students a way to communicate,” Isaac Barton, Information Technology, said.

This new campus-wide system is available to the entire VSU community. It contains features such as chat rooms, data and file transfers, as well as a variety of other features which will also be added.

Students, faculty and staff can now connect with classmates and co-workers through their own buddy list and groups.

Jive allows students to connect to other major IM systems such as AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, GTalk and ICQ.

The new system is an ideal way to keep in touch on or off campus.
“It bridges the gap between e-mail and phone,” Chris Neasbitt, Information Technology, said.

Access to the new system requires the client to be downloaded and then sign-up with your blazenet account username and password.

More information about the client can be found at http://jive.valdosta.edu.

Any problems with the client should be reported at www.valdosta.edu/helpdesk/.
