The GSC East Division Coach of the Year, Mike Helfer looks to lead the VSU men’s basketball team to victory through the GSC Tournament in Southaven, Miss. this week.
The streaking Blazers enter the tournament fresh off of a six game win streak and with no injuries to account for.
The 9-3, GSC East champs Blazers (20-5 overall) hope to storm through the tournament with their fourth ranked offense and second place free throw percentage—both valuable considering that the Blazers producing an average margin of victory of 3.8 points per game amongst Gulf South teams.
The top seeded East Division Blazers along with the Western Division leaders—the Christian Brothers University Bucs—allotted both teams the opportunity to scout out their opponent’s Wed. “play-in” game before the teams take the floor along with the rest of the field this Friday afternoon.
“It can help us, but it can also hurt us,” Helfer said. “The other teams have already had their players on the court.”
“We hope to get into that field of 64 and make some noise,” Helfer said.
The Blazers tip-off at 12:30 p.m. on Fri., March 6 at the Desoto Civic Center, in Southaven, Miss.
