Flyers for bands, restaurants, and other third party affiliates have always been well regulated at VSU, but in recent months solicitation has steadily increased, with individuals posting multiple advertisements on bulletin boards and walls with no regard for school policy.
“Only VSU recognized student organizations and VSU departments are allowed to post flyers on campus,” Sage Archer, director of event services, said.
Lately soliciting has been happening a lot of campus.
In most cases, the individuals who post advertisements are not directly affiliated with the event or venue they are representing.
For example, Colt Ford, a country/rap singer from Athens was unaware when asked about the many posters that have been circulating on campus, advertising their upcoming concert.
“I had no idea about an ad being placed. We are not promoting the show so I don’t know who would have done that,” Ford said.
In response to this issue, plans have been circulating on what VSU authorities are going to do.
“We want student and campus groups to have the ability to advertise, yet we do not want the campus walls and boards utilized by everyone for purely personal reasons with no regard to location,” Kurt Keppler, vice president of student affairs, said. “If we discover a vendor that repeatedly violates procedures, we contact the sponsor.”
While the current procedures for handling solicitation are being evaluated, VSU does have plans for an alternative advertising method.
According to Archer, VSU will be providing a form of online scheduling software, which will allow student organizations to post their event along with specific details. Plans for this software are expected to operational in the near future.
