A Hopper Hall resident assistant was arrested Thursday, April 9 due to charges of theft of a financial transaction card and fraud, according to the VSU Police Department.
RA Willie Springer was arrested for theft and fraudulent use of a Hopper Hall student’s Valdosta State University ID card.
The student reported her card missing the Wednesday afternoon before the arrest.
The stolen ID card held a $15 value. Springer allegedly used $22.60 of the student’s money.
According to the Georgia Criminal Code, both offenses are considered felonies. Financial transaction card theft is described as taking the financial card of another.
Fraud is described as obtaining goods by falsely acting as he/she is the card holder.
The punishment for financial transaction card theft and fraud is a fine of no more than $5,000 and at least a year in jail but no more than three years.
The most Springer may be charged for the two crimes is a fine of up to $10,000 and six years in prison.
According to VSU Police, the arrest is still under investigation.
Thressea Boyd, Assistant to the President for Communications was unable to comment on the situation because the case is still under investigation.
Liz Powell, Hopper Hall Complex Director, and Jack Purser, Graduate Residence Hall Director also refused to comment on the situation.
According to the Hopper Hall’s front desk and the RA Web site, Springer is currently still an RA in Hopper Hall.
