Whether it’s dealing with the sick patients at clinicals or spiking the ball on her opponents, Irene Hannan can handle it all. Hannan, a second year nursing student from Athens, Ga., came to VSU four years ago when Sia Poyer, VSU’s head volleyball coach spotted her at a club tournament in Atlanta during her senior year at Oconee County High School. After one visit to the campus, Irene knew VSU was the place for her. “I fell in love with the school and the atmosphere after my recruiting trip,” Hannan said.

Hannan is a member of the Student Academic Advisory Committee. The SAAC was made to create greater interaction between the athletics administration and the student-athlete. Membership is comprised of two representatives from each athletic team at VSU.
Last year she was honored by the Gulf Couth Conference and named First Team All-GSC. Hannan was the only sophomore awarded to the East’s first team and one of the two sophomores chosen for the entire conference to be named to the first team.
When Hannan is not on the court showing off successful kills and digs, she can be found at the hospital practicing her nursing skills, teaching fitness classes at the Valdosta Country Club, or swimming. Hannan has her priorities in order and she manages her time wisely with the organizational help of her much-needed daily planner.
Hannan has great respect for her coaches as well as her teammates.
“Sia is an amazing coach and has definitely been my mentor here at VSU,” Hannan said. “And every girl on the team is an asset; we are going to have an extremely solid lineup this year and have four new freshmen that all pull their weight.”
Hannan is looking forward to another great season this year beginning Friday, at the West Georgia Invitational against Rollins College.

  1. Keep working hard Hannan. Proud of how much you’ve really grown as a person since you’ve been at Valdosta, that’s more important. Just remember that when you become a nurse and you’re standing next to my death bed 50 years from now, don’t let me die with my mouth open and make sure that I have the remote control in my hand.
