Three Lady Blazers (15-12, 4-6) were named to the GSC all-conference team yesterday after a strong season and a conference tournament berth.
Irene Hannan and Ruthie King, both junior outside hitters, became the first Lady Blazers named to the all-conference first team since Laura Lee Atkinson in 2006. Hannan had a solid year leading the Blazers with 327 kills and 328 digs while King finished second in both categories with 287 kills and 300 digs.
Tania Tauiliili, freshman middle back, earned the first all-conference second team award for the Lady Blazers since 2006. She emerged as the Lady Blazers’ freshman sensation on her way to a team high: 70 total blocks.
It is the first time since 1999 the Lady Blazers have had three women named to the all-conference team. This season also marks the first time the team will return to the conference tournament since 2006, and the Lady Blazers haven’t won in the post-season since 1999, when they beat Henderson State in straight sets.
Overall the Lady Blazers are 2-6 in the tournament and have only won a single set since the Henderson State win. The team finished fourth in the GSC East after pre-season polls placed them last in the conference overall.
