MySpace vs. Facebook: Which do you prefer?

It seems there is this neverending competition between two of the most well-known social networks: MySpace and Facebook. First, Tom founded MySpace, then a group of Harvard students founded Facebook. First, MySpace dominated the Web’s social networking life, then Facebook rose up and took over.

Personally, I still have both. MySpace is great for customization but that seems to be its only advantage. Why have a MySpace if your friends use Facebook more? For me, I still have it for those rare people, namely high schoolers, who decide to keep MySpace as their top choice.

College students tend to use Facebook, which was the original purpose of it, more often than MySpace. I have noticed, though, that middle and high schoolers, and even adults are joining the Facebook frenzy. (I speak from personal experience. My mom and some of my high school teachers have a Facebook.)

If you think about it, Facebook and MySpace are pretty similar. Both have an instant messenger at the bottom of the page. Both allow you to post bulletins or “notes,” although MySpace has a separate blog feature. MySpace is starting to add applications, but Facebook certainly has more. Facebook is more organized in showing people’s updates on the home page by dividing them into separate categories, while MySpace has all of the updates thrown together. You definitely can see the similarities adding up between the two, but it all certainly comes down to this everlasting competition.

So who’s winning? To find out, I asked a group of VSU students who have Facebook, some having MySpaces as well, and asked which they preferred.

Nine students, all different majors and ages, said they preferred Facebook. They seemed to all agree that Facebook was much “nicer” and “cleaner” than MySpace.

“I have a Facebook and a MySpace. I like Facebook better ‘cause most of my friends use their Facebook more than their MySpace. Facebook is a lot easier to use too, but MySpace lets you express yourself more…but Facebook makes it easier to communicate with friends which is the point of the ’social networking thing,’” said Carol Carter, sophomore business education major.

“I like Facebook better. I don’t have a MySpace but it seems too complicated…They should have left Facebook for only college kids though. It’s too weird when I get friend requests from kids I used to babysit!” stated Mandy Moore, senior early childhood education major.

I can’t speak for everyone at Valdosta State, but I definitely say Facebook wins!
