VALDOSTA, Ga. – For the fourth time this season, and the third time in four weeks, Valdosta State’s Tyrone Curnell was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week by the league office Wednesday.
Curnell led Valdosta State to a 58-57 GSC victory over West Georgia last Saturday as he scored a game-high 23 points. He connected on eight-of-15 field goals during the game while also hitting seven of his nine free throws. He scored eight of the Blazers final 11 points in the game, including the winning bucket with a minute to play.
Additionally, Curnell grabbed three rebounds and had three steals in the game while playing 30 minutes.
Curnell is the only Gulf South Conference player in either Division to win GSC Player of the Week honors more than twice this season. He has now claimed the award seven times in his two seasons with the Blazers, the most of any GSC player during that span.
Valdosta State, which moved up to No. 5 in this week’s National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll, returns to action Thursday, February 4 at 8:00 p.m. when the Blazers host GSC-foe North Alabama in the P.E. Complex.
