Football team set for spring game

The VSU football team is set for their annual spring football game this Saturday, Mar 6, at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
“We’ve had a good spring,” David Dean, VSU head coach, said. “It has been very productive and we have answered a lot of questions, but we still have some to answer, like determining our depth. Our attitudes have been great, and I think we have gotten better, and I think we are ahead of where we were last year at this time, which is exciting to see. We still, obviously, have a lot of work to do.”
The team will be split in a black squad and a white squad today by the coaching staff at the field house, which will make up the two teams for Saturdays game.
According to Dean, after Saturday’s game, a starting quarterback will be named for next season. The battle between Jimmy Coy and Russ Callaway has been a fierce battle all spring.
“Saturday is going to be a big tell,” Dean said. “How they do in a game situation and how they perform in front of a crowd and doing it not from a scrimmage aspect, but actually from a game aspect.”
The Blazers have managed to stay healthy so far this spring and have no new injuries to report that will keep guys from playing next season.
“We have had the ankle injuries and the little concussion things, which has kept guys out for a practice or two, but for the most part we have stayed injury-free,” Dean said. “Those guys that have had the little minor injuries are all back.”
The Blazers began spring practice on Feb. 15 under the lights at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The Blazers have since scrimmaged at the stadium one time. The offense scored three rushing touchdowns from three different running backs as the offense earned the victory in the scrimmage.
Following Saturday morning’s game, the Blazers will start back their offseason conditioning program until school lets out, which at that time, the players will be allowed to head home for the summer until the start of training camp begins in early August.
The Blazers open their season up on Sept. 4 when they host Wingate. The Blazers will then travel to take on Newberry the following week.
