VALDOSTA, Ga. – Russ Callaway threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Dean with 1:43 to play in the game to lead the White team to a 15-12 in the Valdosta State Spring Game Saturday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.

Callaway’s pass capped off an 11-play, 53-yard drive in which Callaway completed six-of-eight passes for 61 yards. The White squad moved to the Black’s 21 yard line on the drive before Tyler Josey sacked Callaway for a 12 yard loss. The senior quarterback’s next pass was incomplete before he hit Dean at the goal line for the winning score.

The Black team moved into the White’s territory on the ensuing drive, only to fall a yard short on a fourth down pass to turn the ball over on downs.

Callaway completed 20-of-33 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing one interception on the day.

The White team opened the scoring in the second quarter when Brian Elkins kicked a 37-yard field goal while the Black squad scored the game’s first touchdown right before the half. Austen Roberts led the touchdown drive for the Black team as he completed five of his six passes for the game, including a 23-yard pass to P.J. Katz for the score. The extra point gave the Black team a 7-3 halftime lead.

Callaway put the White squad back in front with a 43 yard pass to Gerald Ford in the third quarter. Ford appeared to get tackled on the play, but never touched the ground as he rolled onto the defender before getting up and out-racing the defense to give the White squad a 9-7 advantage.

Daniel Andersen kicked a 48-yard field goal on the next Black drive while Brett Whitmire was sacked for a safety to push the Black team’s lead to 12-9. The Black squad had a chance to ice the game just prior to the safety as a Harrison Drieling interception of a Callaway pass allowed the Black team to move the ball to the White’s 1 yard line. However, Ronnye Nelson was stuffed on a fourth down run to set up the final White score.

Jimmy Coy completed 11-of-15 passes for 82 yards for the Black team.

“I was very happy with our enthusiasm and intensity today,” said Blazer head coach David Dean after the game. “I thought our quarterbacks played very well and really controlled the tempo. I was also impressed with the play of our linebackers who did a great job tackling.”
