Valdosta, Ga- A school record of 509 packed the park at the VSU softball complex on Sunday afternoon as the Lady Blazers hosted 12th ranked Alabama-Huntsville. The record crowd gave VSU a distinct advantage as the Lady Blazers grabbed two critical wins, 7-4 and 4-2.
VSU pitching ace Holly Satterfield, who celebrated her 21st birthday on Sunday, found herself in an early jam in the opening inning of game one as she allowed an early run to fall down 1-0. After a two out walk by Marti Littlefield and a hit-by-pitch for Alyssa Shirey in the bottom of the first inning, Stephanie Carlson gave VSU their first hit of the day as she blasted a three run homerun over the right field fence to give VSU a 3-1 lead.
Valdosta State added another run to their lead as freshman Sarah Vaughn hit her first career homerun. UAH managed a comeback in the top of the fifth inning as they roughed up Satterfield for three runs on two hits in the inning as they managed to tie the game at 4-4.
After a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth and the top of the sixth inning, Valdosta State added three runs to take a 7-4 lead. Morgan Johnson hit her third homerun of the week while two more VSU runs, Ashley Steinhilber and Sarah Vaughn, came in the inning. The Lady Blazers then retired UAH in the top of the seventh inning to get out of game one with a 7-4 win.
In game two, Valdosta State sent the same lineup on the field with the exclusion of Margaret Carter, who took to the circle for VSU in game two.
Carter received run support in the bottom of the third inning as Melessa Jackson started with a lead off double. After two quick outs, VSU All-American Marti Littlefield blasted her 15 homerun of the season to give VSU a 2-0 lead.
VSU All-American Alyssa Shirey wasted little time hitting her 17 homerun of the 2010 season as she hit a solo homerun on the very next pitch to give VSU a 3-0 lead.
UAH added a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the VSU lead to just 3-1, however VSU wasted little time responding as Sarah Vaughn started the inning with a lead off double. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Vaughn scored on a RBI flyout by Littlefield.
The Lady Chargers added another run in the top of the sixth inning as when Erin Roach hit a solo homerun over the left center fence to make the VSU lead 4-2. Despite allowing a double to the next batter, Carter got out of the jam without allowing another run as VSU took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning.
After failing to mount anymore run support in the bottom of the inning, VSU took to the field in the top of the seventh and provided tough defensive play as VSU held on for the 4-2 win.
With the win, VSU looks to take back the No.1 spot in the South Region with three weeks left until the start of the region tournament.
VSU returns to action on Saturday when they travel to take on West Florida.
