VALDOSTA- With 44 days until the Valdosta State Blazers take to the field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium to take on Wingate to start their 2010 season, many questions still remain about what the Blazers have to offer.
After all, the Blazers posted just a 6-4 season last year— which included losses to Newberry, Delta State, Ouachita Baptist and North Alabama, all of whom are on the upcoming seasons schedule.
The Blazers key offensive weapon in 2009 was quarterback Kellen Lewis, who racked up 2514 yards through the air while running for 485 yards, both of which led the team. Lewis also accounted for 23 of the Blazers 40 offensive touchdowns. However, Lewis is no longer at Valdosta State and the Blazers will turn to their third starting quarterback in three seasons.
The Blazers head into camp— which is set to begin in the beginning of August— without a clear definite replacement for Lewis at quarterback. The battle will between redshirt junior Jimmy Coy, who many believe is the clear favorite, and the senior Russ Callaway, who has spent all his years with the Blazers. Coy has not thrown a pass at Valdosta State, as last season was his first with the red and black and was redshirted. Callaway was 26-45 last year with three touchdowns and three costly interceptions.
Quarterback is not the only question for the Blazers this season. The Blazers also have a young defensive secondary, which was light up at times last year.
As we are 44 days away from the start of the season, there are some things that we know about the Blazers and what they will bring this season:
-DeMario Jones is set for a return for a knee injury and will anchor the defensive line while Larry Dean is set to anchor the line backing core.
-The Blazers have a go-to receiver in sophomore Gerald Ford. Ford played in all 10 games last season for VSU as a freshman and led the Blazers in receiving touchdowns with four.
-The Blazers return all four of their running backs from last season. David Arnold, Derrick Harris, Ronnye Nelson and Michael Brown all return. Nelson will be the starter when the season kickoffs, however he will switch in and out with the remaining three. Nelson finished 2009 as the fifth best receiving option for VSU and was second on the team in rushing with 261 yards and five touchdowns.
We are less than two months from having these questions answered. Follow VSU athletics all season at VSUspectator.com.
