VALDOSTA— The Valdosta State football team will finish their first week of fall practice on Sunday when they host a split-squad scrimmage at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
The Blazers will use the scrimmage to help solidify many positions.

“I want to solidify where we are offensively,” VSU head coach David Dean said. “Our make and what we do well and what do don’t do well. Hopefully find a quarterback and hopefully solidify a lot of positions as far as starting positions and backups positions. We may not be able to do that until the following Saturday because there are certain positions where folks are battling.”
The main position everyone will be focusing on during Sundays scrimmage, is the quarterback battle between Russ Callaway and Jimmy Coy. According to Dean is currently Callaway’s job.
Dean continued to say he is pleased with the play of all of his quarterbacks and is pleased with the progression and the depth at the position.
“I think Brett Whitmire is playing well, I think Jimmy Coy is playing well,” Dean said. “All of those guys are playing really well and I have been very pleased with our quarterbacks. We have a lot of depth at that position.”
During Saturday morning’s practice, the team was split with the offense on one side of the field and the defense on the next. The Blazers finish the practice by scrimmaging. Defensively the Blazers held an edge as they showed high intensity and group tackling.
“I think we had a lot of intensity on both sides of the ball,” Dean said. “We put in a lot of things last night on offense, as far as formations and stuff like that, so our offense was spinning a little bit today, which is understandable for how much we put in. We want to do that to see how they think and make sure they are able to comprehend the things and think fast, which is the way we are going to play.
“I think the intensity was very good both ways,” Dean said. “But I was very pleased to see the way we were tackling. We are not letting people squirt out of piles and different things like that which is exciting to see.”
The Blazers first full scrimmage of the fall will take place at 3:00 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and is open to the public. Read about the game online at VSUspectator.com.
