VALDOSTA- Valdosta State head coach David Dean confirmed on Tuesday morning that quarterback Russ Callaway will miss the 2010 season with a torn ACL.

Dean said on Tuesday morning during a segment on the Scott James Show on Talk 92.1 FM in Valdosta that an MRI on Monday afternoon showed the tear in Callaway’s right knee.

“Unfortunately he will be out for the season. He has a torn ACL,” Dean said. “We had practice last night at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and he was out there and his knee was heavily wrapped and was swollen. (Callaway) and I have a meeting today to talk about his future with us.”

Dean said that Callaway will have a reconstructive surgery soon and will look to stay with the team this season.

“(Callaway) is such a great leader for us,” Dean said. “We want him to be with us in some capacity whether as a student-coach for us this year.”

Callaway went down during Sunday’s scrimmage after completing eight of 10 passes for 72 yards.

This will mark the second ACL surgery for Callaway on his right knee in two years. With the injury, Dean confirmed quarterback Jimmy Coy will be the starter in 2010.
