VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State defense showed some characteristics from it’s past on Saturday afternoon during the teams second and final scrimmage of the 2010 pre-season.
The defensive attack tallied five sacks, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions, including one returned 53 yards for a touchdown, while limiting the offense to scores on just three possessions on the day.
All three scores on the scrimmage came as the team worked in the red zone, with Jimmy Coy leading the team to two touchdowns while Austen Roberts tallied the third. The defense forced a fumble on the final drive of the period and after stopping the offense on the first two-minute drill, tallied its third fumble recovery of the day on the second hurry-up drive.
The offense was stymied on two consecutive drives before Alex Webster made the play of the day when he stepped in front of a Coy pass and returned it 53 yards for the score. The Blazer offense finally seemed to get on track on the next drive, as it moved to the defense’s 26 yard line, only to have lightning end the scrimmage prematurely.
Coy completed 14-of-20 passes for 108 yards on the day while Whitmire was 14-of-22 for 117 yards.
