As the new VSU football season rapidly approaches, the Blazers have their man that will be calling the signals for the offensive unit this season.
Redshirt junior quarterback Jimmy Coy— who entered fall camp as the No. two quarterback on the depth chart behind senior Russ Callaway— was named the starting quarterback less than 24 hours after Callaway went down with a torn ACL in the Blazers first scrimmage of the pre-season.
Despite the disappointing injury to Callaway—who will serve as a student coach this season— the Blazers are fired up and have much faith in their new quarterback to perform well.
“It’s man up or shut up,” safety Antonio Taylor said.
Now that the job is Coy’s, the 5 foot-11 inch quarterback still has much belief and sees a successful season ahead of VSU.
“Were playing good football right now,” Coy said. “We have a couple of weeks to polish up and touch up on things.”
Coy also realizes the emergent responsibility that has come upon him with the loss of a leader like Callaway.
“I have to step it up,” Coy said. “I need to show as much leadership as possible.”
Coy can provide a spark offensively. The junior quarterback can provide a spark with his arm along with his feet.
“He just needs to do his part. His job is to lead this football and control this offense,” VSU head coach David Dean said. “I have much confidence in Jimmy Coy.”
Questions will be answered fast when the Blazers welcome the Wingate Bulldogs to Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Sept. 4.
