VALDOSTA-Just two days away from their second game of the 2010 season, the Valdosta State Blazers learned redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Whitmire will be the starting quarterback when the Blazers take to the field against the Wolves of Newberry College on Saturday evening.

VSU Sports Information Director Shawn Reed confirmed Thursday afternoon that Whitmire is listed as the starter on the Blazers updated depth chart—which was released by VSU head coach David Dean on Thursday morning.

Whitmire replaced redshirt junior Jimmy Coy in the third quarter of last Saturday’s game against the Wingate Bulldogs. Whitmire completed 14 of his 23 passing attempts for 201 yards as he led the Blazers to three scoring drives in the second half—which included the game winning 27-yard drive.

Whitmire said on Wednesday evening that if he was given a chance to be the starter on Saturday, he would probably be less nervous this week than last week and that he was looking forward to the opportunity.

Throughout the pre-season VSU head coach David Dean said that he felt Whitmire has the best potential of any quarterback on the roster. Dean was unavailable for comment early Thursday afternoon.

The start on Saturday will mark the first collegiate start for the Jacksonville native.

The game this Saturday can be heard on the Blazer Radio Network as kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Newberry S.C. You can also read about the game online at vsuspectator.com.
