Lady Blazers seal victory

The Lady Blazers volleyball team advanced to 7-4 after a well-played weekend in the Alabama-Huntsville Invitational. Valdosta State managed to pull out back-to-back wins against Christian Brothers and Henderson State after dropping their first match against Arkansas Tech.
In their first win against Christian Brothers, VSU got out to a slow start, falling 25-20 before bouncing back and winning the next three in a row to take the win.
Irene Hannan put on an outstanding performance against Christian Brothers, putting on a display of 17 kills. Teammate Katie Logan matched her performance against Henderson, with both of them finishing with 28 on the day in total.
On the defensive side, Valdosta State dominated, putting up nine blocks and 66 digs total. On top of that, they held Christian Brothers to a negative percentage in the third set and a .137 attack percentage overall.
Against Henderson, the Lady Blazers managed to push it to the fifth set before sealing the victory. It was the third time the squad has pushed it to the last possible set this season. Their stamina this season has been key, as each time their match goes to five sets, they take the victory.
The Lady Blazers were stout first three sets, averaging a .309 attack percentage with a combined 44 kills. They slipped a little in the final two, however, only with a .133 and .086 attack percentage in the third and fourth sets, respectively.
The outcome of the match came down to the wire. Valdosta took a 16-14 win in the fifth set, pushing past the regulated 15 points in order to win by a margin of two.
VSU will now take a break from tournament play until Oct. 15, where they will host the Wingate by Wyndham Crossover Classic. For now, they will play on the road at West Florida, West Alabama, and Albany State in the upcoming week.
