Music department to snap for scholarships

Written by: Jordan Barela

Things are expected to get jazzy tonight as money is raised for VSU’s music majors.

The VSU Music Scholarship Alliance will hold the first music scholarship fundraiser of the school year tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Fine Arts Building amphitheater. Pops in the Park is an annual music event featuring jazz performances in which the proceeds and donations will benefit students in the Department of Music.

Pops in the Park has been held for over 20 years.  Performances will be by several different VSU musical groups. The groups that are performing include the Steel Drum Band, the New Jazz Ensemble, the Spotlighters and the Jazz Ensemble. Two musical guests, who are VSU alumni, will also be featured. The two featured guest performers will be vocalist Craig Ward and trombonist Steve Pruitt.

“It is important that we have this (fundraiser) because this is where the majority of our money comes from,” David Lee Johnson, professor emeritus of voice of the Department of Music, said. “It is really important for not just the students and their major (but) for the community as well.”

The money for the scholarships is raised from the proceeds of the event and by private donors.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Table reservations can still be made prior to the performance. Tickets are also available at the door.   Attendees can bring folding chairs, picnics and blankets to the event.

Call 229-333-2150 or 229-251-0166 to reserve tickets or for more information.
