After over two decades, a sequel of “Freaky Friday,” “Freakier Friday,” is finally set to see the big screen in 2025. In March of 2024, it was confirmed that the sequel was in the developing phase, with filming beginning in June shortly after.
On Aug. 9th at Disney’s ultimate fan event, D23, stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis announced the official title of the sequel. With filming already underway, Lohan and Curtis have shared photos from the set of Freakier Friday on their social media pages.
Lohan and Curtis have both been using the hashtag “Freakier Friday” since the title of the sequel was announced.
Lohan made her followers aware that the film wrapped up production as she posted on Aug. 21st on Instagram with the caption, “That’s a wrap on FREAKIER FRIDAY! Thank you to the amazing Cast, Crew, producers, and everyone @disneystudios who put so much love and effort into making this movie! Can’t wait to share it with you al1!”
Within the same day, Curtis shared a photo on Instagram of her and Lohan on a beach and stated in the caption “We have tried so hard to keep our story a secret and private until it’s time for release but once in a while an image comes out, and it doesn’t tell anything about the story or about what’s going on with the characters but it does show the joy and fun that we had making #FREAKIERFRIDAY and we know it will be an experience that you will have in theaters next year….”
The film, “Freaky Friday,” adapted from the comedic children’s novel, “Freaky Friday,” that was published in 1972, debuted in 2003. The film quickly became a movie that is remembered in the early 2000s pop culture.
A sequel to the early 2000s film is perfect timing considering there has been a major revival of the 2000s pop culture as of late. This revival has been present in the fashion, beauty, and now film industries.
Lohan and Curtis will star in the film to reprise their roles as mother and daughter, Anna, and Tess Coleman.
Lohan and Curtis will not only be returning as mother and daughter, but there will also be an addition to their family as Lohan’s character, Anna, now has a daughter of her own.
The two stars also worked in the production process of the film as producer and executive producer.
Haley Hudson, Mark Harmon, Rosalind Chao, Christina Vidal Mitchell, and Lucille Song will also be reprising their roles from the original film in 2003. Actors Sophia Hammons, Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan will be joining the cast in the sequel film.
Although the stars are returning, the director and the scriptwriters will not remain the same. The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra and is written by Jordan Weiss.
So, the question that arises, will the sequel “Freakier Friday” top the first “Freaky Friday?” We will leave you wondering until the debut in 2025.
