Valdosta State Blazers soundly defeat the Newberry College Wolves 27-14.
The Blazers had a clear edge throughout the game and never lost the lead after scoring on their first drive. The game harkens back to the days when the way to win was for the running backs to lead.
The Blazers accounted for 197 rushing yards on the day, and the Wolves had 220 yards on the ground. The difference in the game was that the Blazers counted for 128 passing yards compared to just 42 passing yards for the Wolves.
It was a necessary and banner day for senior quarterback Sammy Edwards as far as throwing, as he had 128 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. However, he affected the game with his legs. He had 64 rushing yards and a rush touchdown to go with it.
Edwards was making plays with his feet all night, which allowed him to get out of danger and extend drives on more than one occasion.
However, his rush in the second quarter with two minutes left in the first half at the Wolves’ 35-yard line, Edwards rolls to his left towards the Wolves far sideline trying to find hi receiver downfield before juking his defender and cuts the middle of the field before side-stepping another Wolves defender as he blazed past him to gain 12 yards on a third down.
Ten plays are a highlight to remember to go along with his 30-yard rush to the endzone earlier in the quarter.
As the Blazers return home to Bazemore– Hyder Stadium with a 2-0 record, the anticipation for their next game against the Fayetteville State Broncos is palpable. On the other hand, the Wolves, with a 0-1 record, are gearing up to face the Kiser Hawks at home next week.
