After watching Billy McShepard, #33 on the Blazer basketball team, play forward on the basketball court, one might be a little hesitant to walk up and start a conversation with this Blazer newcomer. After all, McShepard stands at an impressive 6’10” and was not too nice to the GSW Hurricanes when on the court this past Monday night. But in all actuality, McShepard is down-to-earth, and a student who just wants to play basketball.
McShepard is originally from Windsor, N.C., where he attended Louisburg Community College. McShepard says he has been playing basketball for as long as he can remember, but this is his first year playing for the Blazers and he feels his team has a good chance at going all the way. Using his height to his advantage, McShepard has a knack for blocking shots and scoring 3-pointers. “If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me how tall I am,” McShepard commented after the game, “I’d be so rich.”
His major is Criminal Justice, but McShepard confessed he really just wants to take basketball all the way to the professional level. McShepard says the excitement and fast pace of basketball have always appealed to him.
The next chance to catch McShepard in action will be Friday when the Blazers face off with Saint Leo at 8 p.m. in the P.E. Complex.
