“Make Your mark”- International Dot Day

VSU’s College of the Arts has opened an exhibition for International Dot Day to celebrate the 15th anniversary starting on Sept.10 and running through to Sept. 27 to help student’s “make their mark.

To celebrate Dot Day, students are invited to create their own dots for the exhibition in the student gallery on the front side of the Fine Arts Building, facing East Brookwood Drive.

Educator Terry Shay started this tradition in Iowa 15 years ago with his students. His influence has helped others internationally, by joining the celebration.

The inspiration behind International Dot Day began on Sept. 5, 2009, when the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and Paul A. Reynolds was read by Shay to his students, which encouraged his students to believe in their abilities and “make their mark.”

International Dot Day was created to inspire self-discovery and self-expression, while helping individuals recognize their impact and envision their future.

Dot Day is celebrated in over 190 countries today and continues to grow as communities annually to come together to celebrate the “use of our energy, talents and time to make this world a better place,” said Peter Reynolds on the international dot day website.

Peter Reynolds describes Dot Day as a “…celebration of creativity and art… bravery of vision – seeing the possible… community dot connecting… and more.”

The exhibition is located in the student gallery of Valdosta State University’s Fine Arts Building.
