The end of the season is approaching rapidly for the Lady Blazers volleyball squad as they head into their Parents’ Day game on Saturday against West Alabama.  But the Lady Blazers have plenty to be excited about as they approach the weekend.
After the Lady Blazers crushed Fort Valley with a 3-0 sweep, West Georgia’s loss to North Alabama last Saturday clinched VSU’s spot in the postseason.
Junior Ruthie King led the team against the Lady Wildcats in serving aces with four, while junior Irene Hannan dominated with 12 kills.  Junior Emelia Saulter pushed out the sets with 27 assists.
Despite the four game winning streak for the Lady Blazers, they are pushing themselves hard this week to avoid another sweep by West Alabama.
“Well we went to West Alabama [in October] and they beat us in three games,” Hannan said. “I definitely think we were not playing our best, and we are ready to come back and show them some good competition. We beat West Alabama last year, and they are not going to do anything we haven’t seen before. We will be practicing for them this week and will be ready for them.”
While the Lady Blazers have had a winning streak, the same cannot be said for their Saturday’s competition.  Monday, the Lady Tigers broke their two game losing streak against Alabama-Huntsville.
The Lady Tigers have secured their spot for the third consecutive season in the GSC Volleyball Tournament. Even though UWA fell to North Alabama on Friday night, it secured one of the four spots for GSC East with UAH’s 3-0 sweep of West Georgia on Friday.
“This weekend’s game is going to be tough and I’m really excited and pumped to play,” Saulter said. “As a team we are going to have to work really hard to come out on top.”
Saturday’s game is also Parents’ Day for the Lady Blazers and many of the girls are excited to have family come and see them play.
“I know that the girls will be excited to have their family in town especially for such big matches,” said Saulter. “I think it is just a time where the girls can show their parents how hard they have been working all season.”
The Lady Blazers take on West Alabama on Friday at 6 pm and West Florida on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the P.E. Complex.
