Blazers heating up

Over winter break, while normal college students were at home hanging out with their friends and family, the Valdosta State basketball teams were busy in action.
The 11th ranked Blazers were in action six times over winter break as they posted an impressive 5-1 record as their only loss came on the road against Tampa, the day after finals were completed. The Lady Blazers posted a 2-2 record in just four games played over break. The Lady Blazers were schedule to participate in the District of Columbia Classic in Washington D.C; however, a powerful winter storm made travel in the region difficult, so the tournament was cancelled.
Since classes have resumed at VSU for the spring semester, both the Blazers and Lady Blazers have hit the court several times.  Jan. 13th, both teams hosted West Florida. The Argonauts were not a match as both, the Blazers and Lady Blazers, scored over 80 points each and both took down their Gulf South Conference opponents.
The Lady Blazers then hosted Saint Leo on Jan. 16th and defeated the Lions’ 73-60 as they managed to win their fourth straight game. The Lady Blazers also defeated Clark Atlanta on Monday night, 85-45. Every Lady Blazer dressed saw ample playing time, something that had not happened all season according to VSU head coach Kiley Hill.
“I was proud of our efforts and we got to recover a little bit,” Hill said. “We tried to focus on putting kids in that had not played a major amount of minutes and rest some others legs.”
After their seventh straight win, the Blazers then hosted the no. 1 ranked Augusta State Jaguars in what was the biggest game in school history. The third largest crowd in school history made it difficult for the no. 1 team to get on top of the Blazers.
“The atmosphere was amazing,” said All-American Tyrone Curnell. “I didn’t know it was going to be like it was.”
Curnell led the Blazers with 23 points while newly added Kevin Harris scored 18 points off the bench for VSU.
Both teams return to action on today and Saturday when they host West Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville at the P.E. Complex. Read about every Blazer and Lady Blazer basketball game at VSUspectator.com.
