This Friday, the VSU art department will be sponsoring their eighth annual Mother’s Day sale, located in the ceramics studio of the Fine Arts Building. After being hired at VSU in 2001, professor Michael Schmidt along with students of the ceramics program began organizing such events to showcase their hard work and raise money.
“Thirty percent of all sales go toward a Visiting Artist Fund. […] This will help continue the tradition of hosting a visiting ceramic artist at least once a year at VSU, and it also helps ceramics student travel to
annual conferences too,” said Schmidt.
According to Schmidt, the proceeds are used to fund student trips to conferences and bring recognition to the program.
“Fundraising events like this have been instrumental in bringing nationally and internationally recognized artists to programs like ours” said Schmidt.
Although the items are available for purchase, the event itself is completely free.
The students and Schmidt encourage people to come view their talents. This event will showcase ceramic mugs, bowls, pitchers, jars, vases, plates, platters, and more with prices ranging from $10 to hundreds of dollars.
The event will last two days, starting Friday April 30 at 9 am until 3:30 p.m. Saturday May 1. Members of the program are expecting a great turnout and wish to beat their 2009 record, which brought in hundreds of viewers as well as high purchasing amounts.
