Women’s soccer keeps winning

The Valdosta State Women’s soccer team continued their unbeaten start to this year’s program last week, notching notable victories against the Coker Cobras and the Montavello Falcons.

The Lady Blazers visited Hartsville, S.C. to play against the Cobras, looking to build upon their two opening victories.

It proved to be another excellent display from Melissa Heinz’s team and the 1-0 victory could well have been many more with the team amassing 25 shots on target by the full-time whistle.

However, despite their dominance, the Lady Blazers struggled through a goalless first half, before an early second half strike from Abbi Edwards settled their nerves. Despite the Coker offense surging forward and seeking gain the advantage, the Lady Blazers were rarely troubled and held on to maintain their unbeaten run.

Three days later, the Blazers were back in action on home turf against the Montavello Falcons in a match which proved to be the team’s toughest test so far.

In a closely fought first period, the Falcons had lots of possession but rarely tested Olivia Mills in the Lady Blazer’s goal.

VSU then came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and stunned the Falcons with a goal 90 seconds after kick off with Rebecca Edwards tucking away a one-on-one with the keeper after getting on the end of a through ball by Abbie Edwards.

Despite a tirade of late pressure by the Falcons, VSU managed to hold on to pick up their fourth win of the season with a 1-0 victory, continuing their perfect record.

The Lady Blazers will be looking to continue their unblemished start when they travel to Florida Friday night to take on the University of Tampa.
