VMAs: Gaga delivers, Handler fizzles

On Sept. 12, the annual MTV Video Music Awards was held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Calif.
The celebrities were dressed to impress at the awards as usual. Standouts included a dazzling Taylor Swift in a gorgeous dress and a very Barbie-luscious jump suit worn by none other than rapper Nicki Minaj.
The always dynamic and controversial dresses worn by Lady Gaga were the talk of the night; an elegant Renaissance gown designed by the late Alexander McQueen and a dress consisting of raw pieces of meat. Gaga wore the “Meat Dress” to show that everyone has different views of what they believe in and the dress proves that.
One of the celebrities amongst the Worst Dressed list by MTV.com was that of R&B Heart Throb, Trey Songz. Songz was spotted wearing a forest green leather jacket – with the collar popped in Los Angeles on the white carpet.
Host Chelsea Handler received mixed reviews. Handler, who is known for her aggressive humor, addressed much of the anticts from last year’s show.
The performances were overall nothing short of amazing, but were were a cover up for the award winners, seeing that all the performers were people who didn’t win awards. One in particular, rapper B.o.B, was nominated for a total five awards but was unable to beat out Eminem in most of the categories. B.o.B performed snippets of both “Nothing On You” ft. Bruno Mars and “Airplanes” ft. Paramore lead singer Haley Williams.
Taylor Swift gave a very forgiving and predictable performance of “Innocent”. A song and performance that I’m sure was staged by MTV to build off of the Kanye vs. Swift fiasco that happened at last year’s VMA’s.
Kanye West performed the show’s closer with a song taking a shot at himself for the incident called “Runaway” with lyrics as   “Let’s have a toast for the douchebags, Let’s have a toast for the assholes, “Let’s have a toast for the scumbags, Every one of them that I know” making it seem like he was rapping about himself.
The show was opened by a surprise performance as Eminem brought out  pop singer, Rhianna to perform their song “Love the Way You Lie”. Winners included Eminem with two awards, and Justin Bieber winning Best New Artist, becoming the youngest artist to do so. Jay Z and Alicia Keys won Best Cinematography for their stellar collaboration of the song “Empire State of Mind.” Lady Gaga was the big winner with eight awards for “Bad Romance” and her duet with Beyonce on “Video Phone.”
